What is 5W1H?
Japanese has six common question words that are used in everyday conversations and while traveling.

1. Where – どこ (doko)
Use どこ to ask about places.
Pattern
～は どこですか。
～ wa doko desu ka?
Where is ~?
Examples
トイレはどこですか。
Toire wa doko desu ka?
Where is the restroom?
えきはどこですか。
Eki wa doko desu ka?
Where is the station?
ホテルはどこですか。
Hoteru wa doko desu ka?
Where is the hotel?
コンビニはどこですか。
Konbini wa doko desu ka?
Where is the convenience store?
バスていはどこですか。
Basutei wa doko desu ka?
Where is the bus stop?
2. When – いつ (itsu)
Use いつ to ask about time.
Pattern
～は いつですか。
～ wa itsu desu ka?
When is ~?
Examples
チェックインはいつですか。
Chekkuin wa itsu desu ka?
When is check-in?
でんしゃはいつですか。
Densha wa itsu desu ka?
When is the train?
バスはいつですか。
Basu wa itsu desu ka?
When is the bus?
イベントはいつですか。

おみせはいつあきますか。

3. Who – だれ (dare)
Use だれ to ask about people.
Pattern
～は だれですか。
～ wa dare desu ka?
Who is ~?

ガイドはだれですか。
Gaido wa dare desu ka?
Who is the guide?
せんせいはだれですか。
Sensei wa dare desu ka?
Who is the teacher?
スタッフはだれですか。
Sutaffu wa dare desu ka?

4. What – なに (nani)
Use なに to ask about things or information.

～は なにですか。
～ wa nani desu ka?

おすすめはなんですか。
Osusume wa nan desu ka?
What do you recommend?
これはなんですか。
Kore wa nan desu ka?
What is this?
メニューはなんですか。

5. Why – どうして (doushite)
Use どうして to ask for a reason.(なぜ naze、なんで nande）

どうして ～ですか。

6. How – どうやって (dou yatte)
Use どうやって to ask how to do something.

どうやって ～ますか。
